Balance is not just for dancers and yogis – it’s central to what I do as stylist and something everyone should think about when putting together an outfit.
If you are opting for large, dramatic earrings steer clear of a chunky necklace to avoid being too heavy up top. On your hands balance your bling with big cocktails rings - always worn on the middle finger.
Three key pieces, no more
As a general rule of thumb, you should stick to no more than three key pieces of jewellery at any time. Be it a cuff, ring, necklace or earrings, any more than 3 pieces and it’ll look too busy.
When in doubt, take on board the legendary Coco Chanel’s advice and take off the last thing you put on before walking out the door.
Invest in individual pieces
Difference defines you. That is why you should always invest in pieces that speak to you on a personal level and when you find that special piece, you’ll know it and buy it – you won’t regret it.
Antique jewellery is a fabulous starting point, as the story behind those pieces can really speak to you. Honestly, no one did it better than our predecessors. What I love about vintage is it has a story to tell, is one-of-a-kind and with a fab conversation-starting piece who cares about your dress? If you can invest in that quality piece, just do it – it’ll last a lifetime. If you can’t make room in your budget, there’s always layby ladies and of course replicas. In a world of excess, it’s special to have something that no one else has!

If your budget doesn't quite stretch to a complete wardrobe overhaul, stick with the basics. All Australian summer wardrobes need a good pair of thongs, a pair of denim shorts and a failsafe barbecue outfit.
Women may want to incorporate a floaty summer dress and a pair of wedge heels to navigate more sophisticated affairs, whereas men can often make do with a short-sleeved collared shirt and some dressier shorts for those occasions where a little class is called for.
Don't neglect your beachwear, either. The perfect swimsuit is hard to find, so hit the shops now to make sure you're covered for Christmas cavorts in the surf.
Footwear
As much as we Australians love our thongs, sometimes a restaurant, wedding or party calls for something a little more upmarket. The sweltering heat at this time of year may mean socks and dress shoes are out of the question, so men could investigate a stylish pair of leather sandals or some on-trend boat shoes.
