Gok Wan is about to add stage performer to his mighty CV, by appearing in a £1m pantomime. Here, he tells Lizz Brain about his new role, his love for Leicester, his hopes for the city of culture bid and why his family remains the most important thing in life
Gok Wan has been incredibly open about his early life – discussing details of his childhood obesity, being bullied, anorexia, depression, growing up on a council estate in Leicester and being gay. And when it comes to discussing his life in press interviews and his autobiography, nothing seems off-limits. So is he media-friendly or media-savvy?
“I’ve always been an open book. But I made a decision when I started to become known that I could either try to have secrets or I could be open about who I am,” he says. “But there are certain things I don’t talk about. I limit what I say about my family, and I don’t talk about partners.
“Mum is very private and she already says she doesn’t like sharing me with the world.
“But the obesity, anorexia, growing up on a council estate, being gay and of mixed race; talking about it has turned terrible and hurtful situations into inspiring ones for other people.”
Fair enough. We’ll go with media-friendly then. He’s certainly all smiles, relaxed on a sofa, hair and make-up immaculate, and ready for his impending photoshoot.
We’re at Birmingham Hippodrome, where the renowned style consultant, TV presenter, cookery and fashion author will be spending Christmas making his panto debut as The Man in the Mirror, alongside Gary Wilmot as Dame, Stephanie Beacham as the Wicked Queen and former EastEnder John Partridge as Prince Charming, in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
It’s the biggest panto in the land, with a £1million budget, and Gok will be committed to performing up to 12 shows a week.
But he’s not daunted at the workload, or the prospect of such a huge audience for his first dip into pantoland.
“I actually called the producers and asked if I could do it. I’ve been a panto fan all my life and, apart from the fact that my costume is gayer than anything I’ve ever worn in my life, I’m genuinely excited,” he says, agreeing his sparkly suit with huge shoulder trims is part stormtrooper, part Dynasty.
