Tips for Fashion Shopping on a Budget
Are you a fashionista on a budget? I know there are a lot of us out there. I like to think of myself as a smart shopper. It’s something I definitely inherited from my mom! Fashion shopping on a budget is easy, if you know what you’re doing. And I don’t care what anyone says, that feeling of pride you get when you find an amazing deal is so awesome!
As a kid, I remember the days of shopping our favorite budget-friendly stores like Miller’s Outpost (now Anchor Blue) Payless, Susie’s Deals, and Kmart. I couldn’t wait for the weekend when we would head over to the swap meet. My mom would give us a couple of dollars, almost like an allowance, and let us get our shop on! I always ended up with a Hello Kitty item or those rubber bracelets. OK, I’m REALLY showing my age here.
I didn’t realize until I was a teen that my mom is an amazing budget shopper. Even until this day, I think she can smell a sale from a mile away. She’s always telling me stories about the deals she finds. Man, I love that lady. Her great shopping sense has definitely rubbed off!
Now, I don’t mind paying full price for an item if I love it. I also believe that you get what you pay for. That’s something to keep in mind too. But, there are definitely ways to get great quality fashion on a budget. I’ve put together a list of 10 tips to help get you started!
Visit Budget and Designer Retailers, Outlets, and Sample Sales.
Whether it's online or in-store, these places were made for people like us! I love visiting stores like Target, Kmart, JCPenney, Old Navy, TJ Maxx, and Ross. When I'm in a designer kind of mood, I hit up Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack, Off 5th Ave, Last Call, and Barney's Warehouse Sale (online only). If you have an entire day to spare, check out one of the many outlet shopping centers. You seriously have 20+ retailers waiting to give you a great deal. Sample Sales are great too! Designers often offer their items at lower prices because they want to get rid of it.
Search and Use Coupon Codes Online
Don't be lazy! Do your research. Retailers have dozens of coupon codes online just waiting to be used. Google "coupon codes" and you'll see what I mean.
Don’t be Afraid to Visit Thrift Shops, Flea Markets, or Yard and Estate Sales
This is probably where you're going to get the best deals. Yes, the items are used, but so what! Nothing a good wash or dry cleaning can't fix. People want to get rid of their stuff, you might even be able to negotiate too! I've heard stories of vintage items going for a few dollars. I always think of this being an eco-friendly way to shop. It's goes to your closet and not the landfill. It's fashionable recycling!
Always Check the Clearance and Sale Racks
Depending on the retailer you visit, the clearance and sale racks can either be a nightmare or a dream come true. Just have patience and go through the items. You never know what you will find. Especially when items are 75% off! Hellooooo...$25 for a dress that was once $100. I would say it's worth the extra time browsing through the racks.
Join Membership Shopping Sites
I am not going to lie, these are my weakness. Check out sites like Ideeli, HauteLook, Beyond the Rack, My Habit, and Gilt. I've found some great deals on a few of these. Signing up is easy and depending on the site, you can be eligible for a credit when people you invite make purchases. These flash sales are usually for a limited time or until the item sells out.
Do You Love it? Do You Need it?
I have two rules when I shop. Only buy what I love and what I will actually wear. That might sound silly and like common sense, but if I ask myself those two questions before I hit the register, it helps me with those compulsive purchases.
Shop Unseasonably
I swear this will make sense once I explain it. Shop for next year's winter coats at the end of the winter and swimwear at the end of summer. You know you've seen that cute coat on sale, but you couldn't even bear to buy it because the weather had already warmed up. This pretty much goes for seasonable items like flip flops, sweaters, hoodies, shorts, and so on. Just buy it and store it for next year. These are pretty basic items. The styles and trends they come in don't drastically change.
Shop Smarter, Not Harder
If your goal in life is to save money, but look fashionably fabulous, then you have to be smart about shopping. It's very easy to figure out a plan, know what you need, and buy it within a reasonable price. It takes patience. There are so many resources out there that will make fashion shopping on a budget easy and fun! I have faith in you!
